Chemical Injection Rate and PPM Calculator

Convert a target PPM and fluid production into a chemical injection rate in litres or quarts per day, or back-calculate the actual PPM a pump is delivering. The same arithmetic Prodesy runs for every injection point, every day.

Back-calculate actual PPM from pump rate

The formula

Injection rate (L/day) = target PPM × fluid production (m³/day) ÷ 1,000 ÷ chemical specific gravity. PPM here is mass-based (mg of chemical per kg of fluid, with produced fluid taken at 1,000 kg/m³). Multiply litres by 1.0567 for US quarts. To back-calculate: actual PPM = pump rate (L/day) × SG × 1,000 ÷ fluid production (m³/day). For barrels, 1 m³ = 6.29 bbl.

Example: 50 PPM on 500 m³/day at SG 0.95 is 26.3 L/day, or 27.8 qt/day. A pump found running at 35 L/day on that well is delivering 66.5 PPM: 33% over target.

Why the fluid number is the hard part

The chemical side of the calculation is easy; the fluid side is what goes wrong. Production changes daily, group lines treat several wells, and the volume available to the person setting the pump is usually last month’s average. Prodesy’s production data integration allocates actual volumes to each injection point so the PPM in the compliance view is calculated on the fluid the well actually produced. See the treatment variance guide for what to do with the result.

Frequently asked questions

Should PPM be calculated on total fluid or on water?

It depends on the chemistry: water-soluble inhibitors are typically dosed on water, oil-soluble paraffin inhibitors on oil, and some on total fluid. Use the phase the product is designed to treat; the calculator accepts any volume.

What specific gravity should I use?

The product’s SG from its data sheet; 0.9–1.1 is typical. Using 1.0 introduces up to 10% error.

Does the calculator store my data?

No. It runs in your browser and sends nothing.

Stop calculating PPM by hand

Prodesy does this for every point, on real production, every day.
