Paraffin and Wax Management: Optimize Inhibitor Treatment Against Dewax Events

Paraffin wax management is a trade-off between inhibitor cost and dewax cost, and most programs guess at it. Prodesy tracks inhibitor injection per well against hot-oil and cutting events so the trade-off is decided on data.

Prodesy compliance summary: monthly treatment compliance percentage per injection point grouped by product (biocide, corrosion inhibitor, defoamer, demulsifier, iron control, paraffin inhibitor), colour-coded green, amber and red
$660K/mo cost variance eliminated
90%+ cut in treatment variance
200% lab reporting productivity
<5% variance vs 15–20% industry norm

The paraffin trade-off

Under-inhibit and the well waxes off: hot-oil trucks, rod cutting, deferred production. Over-inhibit and the chemical invoice grows with nothing to show for it. Because inhibitor spend and dewax spend usually sit in different budgets and different spreadsheets, nobody sees the total cost per well. Prodesy puts paraffin inhibitor rate, compliance and dewax events on one timeline per well, with cost per BOE for both.

What Prodesy tracks for paraffin programs

  • Continuous inhibitor rate vs target per injection point, daily (treatment accuracy)
  • Batch and squeeze treatments against schedule
  • Hot-oil, hot-water and cutting events per well with cost
  • Combined treatment plus dewax cost per BOE
  • Pour point and cloud point results where sampled
  • Wax-off frequency trend after target changes
Prodesy compliance summary: monthly treatment compliance percentage per injection point grouped by product (biocide, corrosion inhibitor, defoamer, demulsifier, iron control, paraffin inhibitor), colour-coded green, amber and red
Monthly compliance by product type: PA (paraffin) drift is visible in the month it happens.

Results

In one Western Canadian program, combining inhibitor and dewax data allowed targets to be re-set per well; treatment plus dewax cost fell by $0.78/BOE and treatment variance dropped from 18% to under 5%. A chemical vendor in a paraffin-heavy field cut net treatment variance by more than 90% and moved to performance-based contracts on the strength of it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Prodesy tell us the optimal inhibitor rate?

It shows the dewax frequency and cost at each rate the well has run, per well, which is the data needed to set the target. Optimization is a decision the engineer makes with that data in front of them.

Does it track hot-oil vendors as well as chemical vendors?

Yes. Dewax events are logged with vendor, method and cost so the total paraffin cost per well is complete.

Does it handle batch paraffin treatment?

Yes. Batch and squeeze treatments are scheduled and reconciled against inventory alongside continuous injection.
